58. Independence Day

The schoolchildren and many other groups march to celebrate Ghana's independence on March 6.

The Lumen Mundi team was keen to join this year's Independence celebrations. To be honest, I was really dreading it. It's very official and everyone can see you: Was this the right opportunity to come out with our children?

However, I needn't have hesitated. It was great! Mary and Godfred practiced with the children, all from scratch. But they and the children were super enthusiastic and everyone did their very best.

Marching involves a lot: you have to walk at the same pace, you have to stay in place and keep an eye on your neighbor. And all this when there are a lot of people looking at you!

On March 6 it all went a bit wrong in the beginning, but in the end everyone was where they needed to be. You can't have everything shall we say. Unfortunately, Lois couldn't stand the noise, but her grandmother marched along.

Great! In front went Mary, behind Saviour and Ezekiel, on their knees, followed by Asiuk and Dora, Akanzereba and David, and behind them the wheelchairs. Unfortunately, things were too slow for the organization, so in the end Mary and I led the way with Ezekiel and Saviour on our arm. Everybody was so proud!!!

And later, when I was in town center, several people came to congratulate me: Great what we did.

My doubts have completely disappeared and we will be back next year!
